Economics 101

At times like this, there are more important things than football. And it's evident the Chargers agree.
With the nation's economy on the brink of collapse, the Chargers are playing for a higher purpose -- and it showed in Sunday's 22-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
With the defeat, the Bolts fulfilled their patriotic duty by putting an early end to their playoff hopes. So, now that the Chargers are done, Bolts fans no longer have to waste any more time on this dreadful team, and San Diegans can now get an early start on their holiday shopping.
Just the kind of jolt -- or bolt? -- the sluggish economy needs right now.
So we salute the San Diego Chargers -- true patriots!

Giving Thanks

The Chargers continued their playoff push Sunday night with a 23-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
The Bolts are now 4-7, which would normally negate any talk of playoffs.
Did somebody say, "Playoffs? Playoffs?" (You can never tire of Jim Mora).
But Charger fans should consider themselves blessed this holiday season because, even at 4-7, this team is not out of it yet.
Yeah, the Chargers are very thankful to be playing in the worst division in football.
"There isn't another 4-7 team in the league that still has a chance," said quarterback Philip Rivers, whose team remained two games behind first-place Denver in the AFC West after the Broncos got pounded at home by the lowly Raiders on Sunday.
So consider this a huge wasted opportunity for the Chargers.
Meanwhile, in other news Sunday, San Diego State fired football coach Chuck Long ... because, you know, that program has such high standards to live up to.

One for the History Books

You have to give the Chargers credit. Even when they lose -- which is often -- they manage to do something that's never been done.
In the 12,837-game history of the National Football League, there had never been a game that ended with a score of 11-10 -- until Sunday.
The Bolts and Steelers slugged it out in a defensive battle on a cold, snowy evening in Pittsburgh, and Jeff Reed's 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds left gave the Steelers the first 11-10 victory in the illustrious history of the NFL.
But before this 11-10 game could get its official stamp in the league history book, there was some drama at the end.
On the final play of the game, the Chargers tried to lateral the ball to keep the play alive, but Pittsburgh's Troy Polamalu picked up the loose ball and scampered in 12 yards for an apparent touchdown that would've wiped out the historical implications of the preceding three hours.
What ensued was an almost comical lengthy delay, as the play was under review upstairs. Players for both teams stood around, not sure what do -- since the review would have no bearing on who won or lost. The game clock read 0:00, and the review was only to determine whether the lateral was legal, thus, whether Polamalu's TD would count.
Of course, the only people who were really sweating out the review were the wiseguys in Vegas. With the Steelers being 5-point favorites, the review ruling would determine who gets the money.
After an eternity, the officials finally decided that the "lateral" was an illegal forward pass by the Chargers, so the play was ruled dead and Polamalu's touchdown was wiped off the board.
And history scholars everywhere let out a huge sigh of relief, as the league's only 11-10 final score became official.
After the game, however, referee Scott Green told reporters that the officials later realized Polamalu's touchdown should have counted. So, uh, about those wiseguys in Vegas ... perhaps on Monday, Mike Pereira, NFL vice president of officiating, will be getting some calls from the 702 area code.
If you're a Charger fan, you know they had plenty of opportunities to win this game. The Steelers did their part to cooperate, committing 13 penalties for 115 yards -- their most flags in seven years. However, it wasn't enough as the Bolts still have never won a regular-season game in Pittsburgh, falling to 0-13.
But in the end, you have to tip your cap to the San Diego Chargers. Congratulations, guys, for being part of a game that they'll still be talking about a hundred years from now.

Coaching Geniusness

Sunday marked a rare opportunity for local football fans to watch two of the finest coaching minds in all of sports.
Of course, we're talking about the Chargers' Norv Turner and the Chiefs' Herm Edwards.
Grading on the curve, Norv was just a little smarter on this day, as the Chargers held on for a 20-19 victory, thanks to an early Christmas present from Herm. After the Chiefs rallied for a touchdown in the final minute, Herm made a highly questionable decision to go for a two-point conversion rather than take his chances in overtime.
Herm has a history of bizarre moves, including at least one other infamous two-point conversion call
But, Herm, why? Was Herm under the impression that the home team has some sort of advantage in winning the overtime coin flip? If you want to talk percentages, anybody who follows the game will tell you that the two-point conversion is just about the lowest-percentage play in all of football.
Good call, Herm.
As for the Chargers, fresh off their bye week, Norv's troops came out with all the fire and intensity of Bingo Night at your local church.
But what do you expect from these Norv-ized Chargers? That's what they specialize in -- nobody is better than the Chargers at playing lackluster, unimpressive, uninspired football against a clearly inferior opponent.
This time, it was just barely good enough for a win, as Herm decided to gift-wrap one for the good folks of San Diego.
Chiefs fans had to be scratching their heads and uttering a few choice words and wondering, "Herm, what the hell are you thinking?"
But Chiefs fans shouldn't worry about their head coach. He's a man of impeccable intelligence. After all, he is a graduate of the most prestigious university in East San Diego County.
