At times like this, there are more important things than football. And it's evident the Chargers agree.

With the nation's economy on the brink of collapse, the Chargers are playing for a higher purpose -- and it showed in Sunday's 22-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

With the defeat, the Bolts fulfilled their patriotic duty by putting an early end to their playoff hopes. So, now that the Chargers are done, Bolts fans no longer have to waste any more time on this dreadful team, and San Diegans can now get an early start on their holiday shopping. 

Just the kind of jolt -- or bolt? -- the sluggish economy needs right now.

So we salute the San Diego Chargers -- true patriots!
